Wiring does not last forever, and an electrical system built decades ago was never designed for todays air conditioners, electronics, and EV chargers. Here are the signs your wiring may be outdated and due for an update.

Your home is several decades old

If your home was built before the 1980s and has never been rewired, it may still have older wiring methods such as knob-and-tube or early aluminum wiring that no longer meet modern standards.

Two-prong, ungrounded outlets

Widespread two-prong outlets are a clear sign the wiring predates modern grounding requirements, which means less protection for you and your electronics.

A fuse box instead of breakers

If your home still uses a fuse panel, it is likely undersized for modern demand and is a strong candidate for an upgrade to a modern breaker panel.

Frequent breaker trips or blown fuses

Regularly tripping breakers or blown fuses usually mean the system cannot keep up with your electrical load.

Warning signs you can see, smell, or hear
