The main variables are the size of the unit your home actually needs, how far it sits from the electrical panel and the gas supply, whether the panel has room for a transfer switch or needs work first, and what the gas line requires to feed it. Site conditions matter too — a flat spot near the meter is a very different job from a run across a yard. It depends on what you want running when the power goes out, and that is genuinely a choice rather than a fixed answer. Some homeowners want the whole house to carry on as normal, which means sizing for air conditioning, electric ranges, well pumps and everything else running at once. Others want the essentials covered — furnace, refrigeration, water, a few circuits — at a noticeably lower cost. We run a load calculation based on the actual equipment in your home rather than a rule of thumb based on square footage, then walk you through the options. Oversizing wastes money and undersizing causes nuisance problems, so this step is worth doing properly.
If you have natural gas at the house, that is usually the simpler answer: the supply is already there, it never needs refilling, and it keeps running through an outage. Propane is the normal choice for homes without a gas main, which covers a lot of rural properties around Lowell and the townships east of Grand Rapids. Propane works perfectly well, but it needs a tank sized for meaningful runtime and somebody has to keep an eye on the level. There are also differences in how much power a given unit produces on each fuel. We will tell you which one your property actually supports before you choose a unit.
Yes. A standby generator is not something you go outside and start. It is wired into your home through an automatic transfer switch, which watches the utility supply constantly. When the power drops, the switch signals the generator to start, waits for it to come up to speed, and then transfers your house over to generator power. When utility power returns and stays stable, it transfers back and shuts the generator down. The whole sequence takes seconds and happens whether you are home, asleep or away. Most units also run a short self-test on a set schedule so problems surface before an outage rather than during one.
Most standby generator installations take one to two days on site, though the timeline from your first call is longer than that because of permitting and gas work. The sequence is generally: site visit and quote, permit application, delivery of the unit, then installation — setting the pad, placing the generator, running the gas line, wiring the transfer switch into your electrical panel, and commissioning the system. There is a short power interruption while we tie the transfer switch in. After that comes inspection and a startup where we test the whole sequence with you present, so you have seen it work before you need it.
Standby generators are engines, and like any engine they need periodic attention — oil and filters, spark plugs, battery, and a general check of the fuel supply and connections. Most manufacturers specify service on an annual basis or after a number of running hours, whichever comes first, and following that schedule is usually a condition of keeping the warranty intact. The battery is the part that catches people out: it is the single most common reason a generator fails to start when it is finally needed, and it does not last forever. Placement makes a real difference: we position the unit with the manufacturer’s required clearances, sensible distance from bedroom windows, and consideration for your neighbors, which also matters for the setback rules most local ordinances apply. If noise is a particular concern for your property, tell us during the site visit and we will factor it into placement.
Yes, and we handle it. A standby generator installation involves both electrical work and gas work, so it requires permits and inspection, and depending on the municipality there may be zoning or setback requirements governing where the unit can sit relative to property lines, windows and openings. We file the applications, schedule the inspections and meet the inspector on site. That inspection record matters more than people realize — it is documentation that the work was done correctly, and it is the kind of thing that surfaces later during a home sale. Skipping permits on a permanently installed, gas-fed appliance is not a corner worth cutting.
